BMW’s Nano Composite, Shape Shifting Car The ‘Gina’ The Game Has Changed
The GINA is a nano fabric-skinned, shape-shifting sports car concept built by BMW. GINA stands for “Geometry and functions In ‘N’ Adaptations”
They myth of Science Fiction, Transforming/Shape Shifting Vehicles Just Got Real
BMW never ceases to amaze me. I coudnt really appreciate a BMW until I actually started driving one for myself. Every time I drive, I always discover something new about the car, even if it’s just to the coffee shop. Now, BMW has taken things to a whole other level, almost into the realm of science fiction with the BMW Gina. The Gina prototype, features a surface of new nano fabric materials which are highly resistant to expansion, durable and flexible. While underneath, is a light aluminum subframe with movable hydraulic controls that allows reshaping of the cars surface depending on your desire. The Gina has headlights that hide under its skin when not in use, and when turned on, the metal subframe moves the covering fabric laterally away from either side of the kidney-shaped grille, showing up the double lights. With regards to the engine, the prototype is powered by a front-mounted eight-cylinder rear drive platform.
Synthetic body
BMW says the flexible translucent fabric skin – Nano-Spandex, does not swell or shrink, and the movement does not slacken or damage over time. The body changes its shape according to exterior conditions and speeds, and it also allows the driver to change its shape at will. The fabric is stretched over a moveable frame; essential shapes are formed beneath the skin by an aluminium wire structure, though at points where movement is needed, (ducts, door openings, spoiler) flexible carbon struts are used. The shape of the frame is controlled by many dozens of hydraulic actuators, for example, the headlights are revealed when small motors pull the fabric back in an eyelid like fashion. As the fabric is translucent the taillights shine through it. BMW is looking to release the Gina in 2014… so get ready to transform and roll out!
