The Game Has Changed, Man Builds Handheld Laser Gun In His Garage

This is probably one of  the most intriguing things we’ve seen in a long time. Using laser technology that was available primarily to manufacturing companies, and medical professionals, German Hacker Patrick Priebe has built a real handheld laser weapon, and he did it in his garage. His Do It Yourself Laser Project  is getting major buzz on Youtube, and if you haven’t seen it yet, prepare to be awed. The science of it is pretty straight forward. Basically, this  is what you get when you convert a 1megawatt burst of energy into light in a fraction of a second.

With a series of conversions to harness the energy, the pistol uses a very small pulse laser focus lens capable of generating a 1MW-pulse of coherent infra-red light. One shot can punch through a razor blade, most durable ceramics, thin pieces of wood, and other objects of equal density at a distance of about 8 meters.  The effective range of the weapon is about 15 meters.

Patric says the goal of the project was to prove that a handheld pulse laser device was possible using existing items and current technology. Experiments are underway for the energy of the device to be increased, and possibly converted into a rifle. The weapon  is 13 inches  long and weights about 2 pounds.

* Patrick has been overwhelmed by inquiries about this gun, it takes about 4 days to make one. He will be making another one for sale and says it will take a month or two. Since the release of the video, various laws have been instituted concerning high intensity laser beams for personal use.
