Nike Announces Power Lace Shoes Will Be Available In A Few Days
There were plenty of amazing technological wonders in the ‘Back to the Future’ franchise, time machines, hoverboards, and other nifty items. However, without a doubt, one of the coolest things that had pop culture a buzz was the Power Lace shoes. The question has always been  “Are we really gonna see power laces by 2015 as predicted in the film? To that, Nike say YES!”
Today,  Nike designer Tinker Hatfield, the man behind most of the Air Jordan series and many other popular shoes, confirmed that the power laces from Back to the Future II will finally be released in mass to the real world by 2015. In 2011, Nike  actually manufactured 1,500 pairs of the Air Mag  (at $4,000 per pair,)  raising $6 million for  the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.
The sportswear company  filed a patent on the self-lacing shoes back in 2010. The application showed a design much like the shoes from the movie with lights on the sole, and a button to activate the laces. There is also an AC power charging system included.  The shoes will supposedly clamp up around the wearer’s foot just like they did in the film.
The scene in Back the the Future II featuring the self-lacing shoes is only a few seconds long, but it has remained embedded in popular culture for quite some time. Tinker says the pop culture longevity is most likely because unlike hoverboards  “power laces seemed doable & vaguely possible.” So here we are, mere months away from the real thing. Better start saving  now ( or go to the future and grab some 😉 )
